Trip to the Urgent Care Clinic

I am 26 years old and have never broken a bone. I come from a family of 5 kids. Only one of my siblings has had stitches and none of us have ever broken a bone. Brian, on the other hand has been to the emergency room 4 times in his life. He broke his elbow and he's had stitches numerous times (all on his face I might add). There are 6 kids in his family and 5/6 of them have also been to the emergency room for stitches or broken bones. Well, now it's official, Chyler takes after the Tree side.

On Monday, Martin Luther King Day, Chyler was eating dinner at the table. I stepped away to get something in the kitchen. While doing so, Chyler tried to get up and fell off the chair. She's usually a tough little gal, but this time she cried hysterically and wouldn't calm down. After sitting her on my lap and trying to soothe her, we noticed her arm started to turn red and that she was holding it. Red flag! We quickly grabbed our things and headed to a nearby urgent care clinic. They took x-rays and confirmed our fear that she had indeed broken her arm. She had a hairline fracture on her radius bone. They put her arm in a splint, made us an appointment with a doctor a few days later (so the swelling could go down), and sent us home.

I was really worried how Chyler would handle the splint, but surprisingly, she was such a little trooper. When we got home from the urgent care clinic, she was her happy little self running around playing with her toys. She couldn't use her fingers on her hurt arm, but it didn't seem to bother her. She just made do with what she had.

On that Friday, we met with a doctor who put her arm in a cast. Unlike the splint, the cast had to go over the elbow so it wouldn't fall off. That worried me more since I knew she wouldn't have as much mobility. Chyler surprised me again though and has handled the cast with ease. She gets it off on February 8, just 2 1/2 weeks.

Finding shirts to fit over her cast and giving her baths without getting the cast wet have been little issues we've had to overcome. But overall, the experience hasn't been as bad as I feared. I am definitely NOT hoping for a repeat, but I am so greatful things have gone so well.

poor chyler! so sad to break your arm at such a young age. i'm glad she's handling it so well, though. she's cute in her little purple cast!

9/10ths of the coolness law involves awesome scar/broken bones stories. She will be a star at school!
