What's in a Name?

A common question I've been asked since Chyler was born was where I came up with her name. With a new baby coming and the choosing of another name, I thought I'd do a post on Chyler's name and baby tree's name.

Chyler Tree
When I was a teenager, I came across the name Chyler in a magazine. From that day on, I've loved the name and planned on naming a future daughter Chyler (just ask my family). The reason I loved it so much was because of it's uniqueness. Growing up, I had a less than common name and enjoyed being the only Kyla in a class. I also enjoyed meeting someone new, introducing myself, and hearing them say how pretty they thought my name was. I wanted that for my daughter as well.

When I was older, I found out that the person in the magazine whose name was Chyler actually pronounced her name with a /k/. For years, I had pronounced the name with a "ch" sound though. When I heard that, I was surprised, but happy. I felt like pronouncing it with a "ch" made it even more unique and beautiful.

Chyler does not have a middle name, at least not yet. It's a tradition on my dad's side that when a girl is born, she is not given a middle name. When she later gets married, her maiden name officially becomes her middle name. That way she can always carry her roots with her. I guess I like being different in small, fun ways because I really enjoyed how not having a middle name made my name a little more unique. Now that I am married and my name is Kyla Lewis Tree, I enjoy being able to carry my Lewis heritage with me, even though I'm a Tree.

This is just a funny story, but I thought I'd add it. When Brian and I started seriously dating, I mentioned to him that I really liked the name Chyler for a girl. Little did I know that Brian would later tell everyone that he didn't debate the name Chyler when we found out I was pregnant with a girl because it was our prenuptial agreement :)

Jackson Lewis Tree
Since around July/August, Brian and I settled on the name of baby #2. We were sitting around debating names when Brian threw out "Jackson." I've always liked the name and said we could keep it on the save list. My mom later pointed out that it would be so fitting because Brian's mom's maiden's name is Jackson. When I heard that, I latched onto the name.

Unlike Chyler, Jackson will have a middle name from birth. Continuing with the Lewis tradition, when a son is born, he is given the mother's maiden name as his middle name. I really like this tradition as well because even though his last name is from his dad's side, I appreciate knowing that he has a little Lewis inside of him as well. I am proud to have been a Lewis and I want to instill that in my children as well.

What makes Jackson's name unique in my opinion is that all 3 of his names are last names.
Jackson- Brian's mom's maiden name
Lewis- my maiden name
Tree- Brian's last name

I love your baby boy's name! Jackson is one of my favorite boy names, and I think you're so lucky that Lewis is a boy name and a last name. It all fits so well!
